You'll see scenes filmed in Saigon on Dec 11, 1966, including the Continental Palace Hotel, the Opera House, Lam Son Square and the soldier statue, and Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and his wife leaving church. There is footage and news reports about a new type of minesweeper being used on the Dong Nai and Long Tau rivers -- a converted River Patrol Craft (RPC) -- you'll see the boat in action and some of its armaments (50 cal, M79 Grenade Launcher).
There's footage of Saigon at Christmas time, with a market set up along the city streets selling Christmas trees -- real ones and also aluminum, and all sorts of colorful decorations.
Bob Martin got to meet and interview John Steinbeck when the author toured Vietnam in late December of '66. You'll see Steinbeck aboard a PBR at Can Tho and hear him talk about his impressions of the country, the war, and the men patrolling the rivers. You'll fly by helicopter out of Binh Thuy Airfield over the Mekong Delta back to Saigon -- there's some double-exposure film with footage of Saigon and PBRs with San Francisco in the background, then some shots of the US Naval Advisory Group Headquarters building, city streets and traffic, Saigon City Hall, and a huge English-language sign celebrating "the Spirit of Mutual Assistance of the People & Governments of the Free World Nations..."
