"CYCLONE" In The Philippines - 1945
WWII Home Movies

Color home movies of the 38th ID in the Philippines during WWII, including rare footage of Gen. MacArthur's return to Corregidor on March 2nd, and the assault on Fort Drum on April 13th, 1945.

You'll see footage filmed on Luzon: Filipino villages and civilians, American troops dishing out food to a large crowd of children and adults, a Filipino Guerilla tent camp, and armed Filipino soldiers.

There is rare footage filmed on Corregidor showing Gen. MacArthur arriving by jeep at Topside for the ceremonial raising of the Stars & Stripes on the old Spanish flagpole. After the ceremony MacArthur leaves and you'll see shots of the area, including heavily damaged Long Barracks and the remains of parachutes still tangled in the trees by the parade grounds.

You'll see a view of Caballo Island across the water, and then on Caballo you'll watch men from the 38th ID pump diesel through hoses from an LCT up the hill into enemy held caves and then smoke billowing up as they're burned out.

There is extremely rare footage of the assault on Fort Drum, including shots of LSM-51 snugged up to the island and troops crossing the specially-built wooden ramp onto the top of the fortress, soldiers guarding vent holes and openings, troops returning to the LSM, and then a distant view of a rising plume of smoke as Fort Drum explodes. (3000 gallons of diesel had been pumped into the passageways of the fort during the operation -- it burned for days, killing over 60 Japanese soldiers).
Other footage includes:
~ships on Manila Bay
~Filipino men roasting pigs on a spit
~US soldiers at the entrance to the Malinta Tunnel
~women and children at a camp (liberated Internee Camp?)
~people with Philippines & US flags on a partially built bridge, & riding on a jeep
~airstrikes on a hillside
~GI inspecting a large mortar
...and more
