"CAMP GOLDBERG - QUI NHON"
Vietnam War Home Movies

Color home movie footage filmed during 1962 by Frank Finn while he served with the 8th Transportation Co. at Camp Goldberg, Qhi Nhon.

Mr. Finn edited his reels of film and titled his movie "1962 - The Year of the Tiger in Vietnam". He dedicated his film to the memory of CWO Joseph Goldberg, Sp/5 Harold Guthrie, and Sp/5 James Lane. All three lost their lives on July 15, 1962 when their helicopter was shot down by the VC -- reportedly the first US Army Aviation personnel killed in action in Vietnam.

You'll see scenes filmed in Saigon -- busy streets with traffic and pedestrians, the Saigon Opera House, Tu-Do Street, Metropolitan Hotel, Hotel Majestic, the Trung Sisters Statue (before it was destroyed), Notre Dame Basilica and other churches, and children playing at a school or orphanage. There are some shots of Independence Palace (Norodom Palace) showing the destruction caused in Feb. '62 when it was bombed during an assassination attempt on Pres. Diem by South Vietnamese pilots flying Skyraiders. There's footage of a wrecked Skyraider with VNAF markings (514th FS "Phuong Hoang") -- with close-up shots of bullet holes in the wings and fuselage. You'll see more aircraft on the ground and in the air: F-102 Delta Daggers, C-123 Provider, OV-1 Mohawk, H-34 Choctaw, and some great footage of an H-21 Shawnee helicopter hovering and flying. There's some aerial sequences filmed from different aircraft, flying over the base and countryside, and along the coast. You'll see shots of "Lane Hangar" and the "Camp Goldberg" sign, with shots of the camp -- rows of hootches with close-ups of door signs: "Live Wires", "Short Timers", "Grease Monkeys", "Mavericks", "Stumble-Inn", etc. At Tan Son Nhut Airport you'll see VNAF men posing for photos and waving, and guys waiting to board civilian planes for the flight back home.

Other footage includes:
~animals and gardens at the Saigon Zoo
~men target practicing with rifle and handgun
~T-28 Trojans flying
~flood water surrounding buildings at Camp Goldberg
...and more
