"MARSHALL'S AMPHIBS"
WWII Home Movies

Rare color and b&w home movie footage filmed by Lieut. Richard M. Marshall while he island-hopped around the Pacific with Amphibious Group 12 from Dec. 1944 through Feb. 1946 -- stopping in Hawaii, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Occupied Japan.

You'll start out in Hawaii during Dec. of '44 -- with sights on the island, officers at a luau, and at sea aboard PCE-1452. In Samar, Philippines (1945) you'll see sailors mingling with Filipino civilians, signs advertising the Leyte-Samar Boxing Championships, beach activity and men boarding landing craft. You'll see rare b&w footage filmed aboard the USS Teton (ACG-14) on April 1, 1945 -- the first day of the assault on Okinawa, shots of landing craft and ships, and footage filmed on Okinawa from May to June, 1945. There you'll see the harbor filled with ships, camp areas with tents, sandbags and bunkers, a sign "C.P. Group 12 Beach Master", Okinawa scenery and tombs, footage on the road to Yontan Field, a Japanese aircraft bunker, destroyed homes, and piles of US and Japanese wrecked aircraft at Yontan. In camp you'll see Lt. Marshall holding up a captured Japanese flag.
June 1945 in Manila -- you'll see footage of sunken ships in the harbor, damaged and destroyed buildings in the city, burned out streetcars -- and Filipinos out on the streets going about their normal daily activities. There is footage of Bilibid Prison, with close ups of the exterior of some of the buildings. You'll visit Ocampo Pagoda and the strange collection of sculptures in the gardens -- statues of dancing frogs and nude women (Lt. Marshall, wearing a Shore Patrol armband, gets up-close and personal with the naked ladies). In the harbor you'll move in close to the USS Hansford (APA-106), (Admiral Hall and his staff transferred from the Teton to the Hansford for the trip to Japan after news of the surrender reached the Philippines). Next stop in the Philippines for Lt. Marshall is Zambales, where he films scenes in the towns and countryside, before moving on to Occupied Japan. There he spends time in a port city (Yokosuka?) and takes a train through the country, stopping for a visit at Kamakura where you'll see the giant Buddha statue. Finally, Lt. Marshall heads back to the U.S. aboard the USS New Jersey (BB-62), arriving in San Francisco in Feb. 1946.

Other footage includes:
~signalman raising semaphore flags aboard PCE-1452
~Pasig River, Dewey Blvd. and Jones Bridge in Manila
~farmers working in fields
~signs in Zambales: Boogie Woogie Nite Club, Navy Prophylactic Station
~launch & recovery of scout plane from deck of USS New Jersey

**Some of the original movie reels were found in very poor condition and the footage had to be salvaged from brittle and shrunken film. These sections have a wavey and crackled appearance but are still well worth viewing. Some short sections could only be saved long enough to be transferred and no longer exist as film**

The DVD has a soundtrack of WWII era radio shows.
