"LT. NEWMAN'S SUBRON ONE"

Home movies filmed by Lt. P. Phillips Newman Jr., Submarine Squadron 1 Medical Officer, stationed at Subase Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1951.

You'll see scenes filmed in Hawaii -- an Area Patrol sailor shows a large cut-away model of a submarine, and there's a diorama showing a sub on the ocean floor with a Sub Rescue ship on the surface above it. You'll go out on the Submarine Rescue Ship USS Coucal (ASR-8), and watch as huge chains are released over the side and metal floats for sub rescue are deployed.
There is extensive footage filmed from an unknown submarine on a cruise from Hawaii to Japan. Lt. Newman filmed while cruising on the surface and did not show the interior of the sub. You'll see footage of Lt. Newman and others throwing flower leis into the ocean from the deck, great views from the conning tower as the sub crashes through the waves, and guys lounging around in the sun. This footage is accompanied by exclusive audio from rare sonar tapes of a sub tracking a warship, (recorded on a different sub during the same era.)
Then you'll see some aerial footage filmed from a plane flying over an aircraft carrier, ships and subs off the coast of Japan. In Japan you'll visit the huge Buddha at Kamakura and view some rural areas, and then take a flight to Midway Island where on a quick stop-over you'll see some Gooney Birds and buildings.

Other footage includes:
~sailors goofing around with semaphor flags on the deck of the sub
~Japanese villagers, farmers
~sailors watching a snake & mongoose fight in a cage
...and more.

The DVD has a soundtrack from 1950s era radio shows & rare submarine sonar tapes.
