"USS PITTSBURGH (CA-72) Home Movies"
1950s Far East Cruise

Color home movies filmed by a sailor on the heavy cruiser USS Pittsburgh, circa 1954-55. They go through the Panama Canal and make stops in several Far East ports, including Hong Kong. This may be one of the last cruises of the Pittsburgh, as she was decommissioned in 1956.

You'll see footage shot onboard the USS Pittsburgh at sea, alongside the USS Holder (DDE-819), see the gun positions firing and sailors busy swabbing the deck. There's extensive footage of the trip through the Panama Canal, passing other ships, and great shots of the locks in action. You'll watch as a US Navy HUP helicopter takes off from the Pittsburgh, and see them re-fueling with the USS Capacon (AO-52). Go on shore-leave with the sailors, somewhere in the Orient, visiting towns and the beach, and in Hong Kong you'll visit Tiger Balm Garden. Later you'll see a naval shipyard full of ships, and crowds of families waiting as the Pittsburgh returns.
