"STOLL'S TREK"
World War II Home Movies

B/W and Color home movie footage filmed by PFC John W. Stoll as he traveled by convoy with the 253rd Engineer Combat Batallion heading for Le Havre, France and a ship home in the summer and fall of 1945. On their long trek they make stops in Berchtesgaden / Obersalzberg, go skiing at Seegrube, cross the Brenner Pass, visit the Lake Geneva area, and more...

You'll see scenes filmed while traveling by train, leaving a tent camp in Saarebourg and pulling out of the Strasbourg-Neudorf depot. Then they set off in a truck convoy, passing through cities and countryside. You'll see Heidelberg and a bridge collapsed into the Neckar river, a villa in the mountains called "Der Tauernhof", where the convoy stops for a break. The convoy drives the Kehlsteinhaus road up to Berchtesgaden/Obersalzburg -- you'll see destroyed barracks buildings (SS Kaserne), and the men poking around the remains of Hitler's house. An afternoon is spent at the ski resort of Seegrube, where the men ride a gondola up to the lodge and spend some time on skis, drinking beer and having a good time. You'll cross the Brenner Pass, and travel through towns and villages in Italy, around Lake Geneva, and France, eventually heading for Le Havre. At the Cigarette Camp "Home Run" you'll see men preparing the shipping schedule on a blackboard, getting ready for their voyage home, boarding transport ships, and arriving back on US soil.
