"SUBRON ONE"

A pair of home movies filmed by servicemen with Submarine Squadron One, stationed at Subase Pearl Harbor during the 1950s.

"Lt. P. Phillips Newman - Subron One Medical Officer, 1951" -- begins with an Area Patrol sailor showing a large cut-away model of a submarine, and there's a diorama showing a sub on the ocean floor with a Sub Rescue ship on the surface above it. You'll go out on the Submarine Rescue Ship USS Coucal (ASR-8), and watch as huge chains are released over the side and metal floats for sub rescue are deployed.
There is extensive footage filmed from an unknown submarine on a cruise from Hawaii to Japan. Lt. Newman filmed while cruising on the surface and did not show the interior of the sub. You'll see footage of Lt. Newman and others throwing flower leis into the ocean from the deck, great views from the conning tower as the sub crashes through the waves, guys lounging around in the sun, and goofing around with semaphor flags. This footage is accompanied by exclusive audio from rare sonar tapes of a sub tracking a warship, (recorded on a different sub during the same era.)
Then you'll see some aerial footage filmed from a plane flying over an aircraft carrier, ships and subs off the coast of Japan. In Japan you'll visit the huge Buddha at Kamakura, watch a snake & mongoose fight, and view some rural areas, and then take a flight to Midway Island where on a quick stop-over you'll see some Gooney Birds and buildings.
Approx. 23 minutes

"USS Gudgeon (SS-567) 1958-59" was filmed by QM1 (SS) Roy D. Stout. It begins with footage of a ceremony on the deck of the USS Gudgeon -- the captain is presented with a large silver platter and plaque. There's footage of a couple other ceremonies, and scenes filmed at a couple different baseball and softball games with Gudgeon, Sub Pac, and Naval Base teams playing. There's some blurry footage of the Gudgeon coming into port with crowds waiting and jets of water being sprayed by a fireboat. The film clears up and you see Santa Claus wearing the Gudgeon patch on his suit riding on the deck of the sub with a Merry Christmas banner and a strange tall elf dressed in gold. On shore he's greeted King Kamehameha. This movie includes a soundtrack from a 1958 US Navy recruiting radio program.
Approx. 14 minutes.

The DVD has a soundtrack from 1950s era radio shows & rare submarine sonar tapes.
